New Share Information Technology

To share Data is one of the particular changes in the called new "information era" and not only within the office but mostly in the business to business

The most usual way to share files has been the email tool attaching all type of files overloading mail servers and most important being blocked by them.

Webdisk is a remote file storage system that allows you to store your files on a UCIT server making them easily accessible from any computer with an Internet connection. Webdisk allows you to give other users access to some or all of your file folders.

Webdisk is based on a technology called "WebDAV," which is a relatively new internet standard for sharing files that is supported by Microsoft, Apple, and the Open Source community. A WebDAV server is really a glorified Web server, with the ability to upload files as well as download them.

The Benefits

So if you use Web Disk technology instead of the simple email protocol, you can experience the following benefits:

  1. Because you can access your Webdisk from anywhere on the internet, you no longer have to copy files from one place to another. You can simply leave them in your Webdisk and access them from home, computer labs, or your laptop.
  2. Webdisk files are automatically backed up every day, so they can be recovered if they are inadvertently deleted or changed.
  3. You can send all types of file formats, like .exe .dll or compressed executables that are blocked by most email servers
  4. You can send bigger files, normally limited to size of 2MB or 5 MB by the most free email services like Hotmail or GMail or even paid services due to their policies.
  5. You can configurate the Web Disk to be secured with user and password access permissions so that data files can only be done with granted permissions.
  6. You can create shared folders in your Webdisk. You can give access to a shared folder to one or more individuals, or to one or more groups of people.
  7. Your Webdisk access (client) can appear to be a local disk drive, a network place, a mounted filesystem, or whatever else makes sense on your desktop computer.
  8. You can give read-only access or you can allow others to create, update, and delete files and subfolders.
  9. Web disk access can also be of configured to be using a SSL, this using encrypted data transfers
  10. As an added bonus, Webdisk makes it easy to publish Web pages.

More Features

Webdisk does not require a persistent internet connection

Your Webdisk connection is independent from your internet connection. Once you have connected to your Webdisk you will stay connected on even if you disconnect from and reconnect to the internet. Obviously you cannot access Webdisk files when you are not connected to the internet, but the point is that you don't have to keep reconnecting your Webdisk.

This means that if you have a permanent internet connection you can leave your Webdisk permanently connected and treat it almost like a hard drive.

Webdisk Client caches your files

In order to maximize performance, particularly on a slow internet connection, Webdisk Client "caches" files for you. This means that it makes a copy on your local hard drive rather than obtaining it from the server every time you need it. If you only access your files from a single machine this will be totally transparent to you, but if you access your files from multiple locations then you need to understand this caching behaviour.

The cached copies of your files "expire" after a certain time. For example, if your timeout period is one hour, then if a file in your cache is older than an hour Webdisk Client will get a fresh copy from the server the next time you open the file. You can update files on-demand using the right click of your mouse.
